COURSE DESCRIPTION:
The deck officer mainly performs watchkeeping duties, takes part in the manoeuvres of the ship and supervises the inspection and maintenance of parts of the ship, in particular to ensure the perfect efficiency of navigation and communication instruments for the safety of the ship. He can take on the role of Telecommunications Commander, responsible for the ship’s radio and satellite communications, a delicate role especially in emergency situations.
To perform this role, specific technical skills, a good degree of autonomy, and organisational ability are required in addition to knowledge of languages. Knowledge of telecommunications systems and related electrical and electronic equipment is also indispensable, as well as a sense of responsibility and the ability to intervene immediately.
The activities that characterise the training course are aimed at achieving the skills, abilities and acquisition of knowledge referred to in Section A-II/1 (Deck Officers) of the STCW Convention ‘78/95 as amended 2010. The figure aims at the attainment of skills, abilities and knowledge related to the field of vessel operation traceable to the professional figure of the Deck Officer referred to in Ministerial Decree No. 251 of 25/07/2016 of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport.
The course includes a unified final examination to obtain the ITS diploma and the COC according to D.I. No. 15 of 23/01/2018.
The deck officer is responsible:
COURSE LOCATION: Livorno
DURATION: 3 years (12 months boarding and 1200 classroom)
RECIPIENTS: Young people who have just graduated and adults up to the age of 54 with a secondary school diploma.
SCHEDULED START: December 2024 – Mandatory attendance

REQUIREMENTS FOR ACCESS TO THE COURSE:
TOPICS: The educational pathways are aimed at the acquisition of knowledge, skills and abilities related to the field of Vessel Conduction, traceable to the professional figure of the Navigation Officer as per Ministerial Decree No. 251 of 25/07/2016 of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport.
EDUCATION RECOGNISED AT THE END OF THE COURSE: Higher technician for vessel operation or for the management of on-board installations and equipment.
FIELD: Sustainable mobility and logistics, area mobility of persons and goods, national higher technical figure for vessel driving or management of on-board equipment and apparatus.
